There is a documentary called ‘Degenerate Art: The Art and Culture of Glass Pipes’ that actually covers the history and relevance of Bob Snodgrass and his art. How it was first sold at Grateful Dead shows in the parking lot and helped grow borosilicate glass art. Bob invented many aspects of borosilicate glass art like fuming the glass with precious metals. Bob’s apprentices like Hugh Salkind, Cameron Tower, Bob Badtram, Brian Padilla, Brad Tenner, all played historic roles in glass art too. Bob’s legacy is so broad because of all the artists he mentored. A genuine Snodgrass is as much a piece of history as it is a piece of glass art.

This is the classic basic Tophat by Bob Snodgrass. It’s initialed with an “S” for Snodgrass in the fuming on the bottom of the face. This piece is also dated by Bob with “19” drawn in boro. These are most affordable signed Tophats we’ve ever had. This will be a real scoop for someone out there as it’s the longest basic Tophat we’ve ever seen! Beautiful fuming is thick all over the Tophat and face and there are a lot of color hues. On the stem is a logo in handwriting script that says “Glass by Snodgrass” with a small skull emblem. A beautiful flower piece by the father of glass art!

The blue silver fuming accents look great and create shades of blue and violet. This pipe has no carb on it because that is how the original style was made. The original Tophat pipe that used to be bounced off the pavement at Grateful Dead shows. Also, not having carbs on the Tophats is what kept Bob out of jail back during the raids in Eugene. Just a bit of Snodgrass history. 5.5 inches long, 2.5 inches high, and 1.5 inches wide makes this a long basic Tophat. Amazing glass art from Bob Snodgrass and we all thank bob for our Snoddy!

The details are many on a piece like this by Bob. If you are lucky enough to get this piece we encourage you to get in touch with Bob and the @SnodgrassGlass_Official account on Instagram and ask them about your Snodgrass if you have questions.
