Description

Brian McCauley, aka gasp, discovered glass flameworking in 1998. Inspired by the autonomy and creativity of the pipe making scene he spent the next 5 years engrossed in glass. Part of the 2nd wave of pipemakers, his style pushed the boundaries of shaping and patterning, incorporating the influence of San Francisco’s urban culture and street art. Later that year, gasp relocated to Portland, OR, where he began to explore more classic forms.

Gasp uses a variety of techniques to elicit an emotional response from the viewer. From subtle layering of gold and silver fume, to heavily saturated colored glass and vibrant transparents, the color and pattern create a body of work that maximizes light play within the glass. This is the new style of fumed spoon by gasp. A classic pipe with his style of shaping and fume. A deep violet from gold fuming is really bright in the can. The face has a beautiful fumicello dot flower. The stem has more yellow in the tones. The stem has colored fuming and fine cane both in the tube and in the sleeve, for a sense of depth to the color. The shaping and fuming is exceptional on this piece, and the color change should be interesting too. The fuming comes spiraling down to the mouthpiece with fine pulls of colored cane that has a retti feel. The colors in the stem flower out symmetrically in the maria of the mouthpiece. This is a nice touch, and there are quite a few nice details on this pipe.

There are two clear marbles on the can. In my hand they fall under the middle and index finger quite comfortably. It feels right in the hand and makes working the carb with your thumb feel more comfortable. A bit of Amber Purple in the carb is a nice touch and the generous carb makes control of your pull easy. 4.5 inches long, 2.5 inches wide with marble and carb included, and 1.75 inches high. This spoon leans to the small side, and the ping pong ball-sized can feels sturdy. Beautiful work from gasp out of Portland, OR!
